Sunk costs

Meen

Well-known member
I woke up one morning with regret.

When I was 5 and won a drawing competition,
My teacher was shocked at the details and
said she has never seen something like that by a 5 yr old.
She told my parents, I have great future in arts.

When I was topper in sciences throughout my highschool,
my teacher was convinced I was genius and special.

When my paper was published first time in a science journal,
My professor was certain I would pursue my phd and research.

It was not just the others. Whenever I answered a question
Or topped an exam or even solved a hard puzzle
I would feel like I could be anything in the world, if I want to.

I am now 28 and a nobody. Existential crisis is real and
it was painful.

I know I wasted years doing nothing, not anymore.
So I had a quick breakfast and spent the rest of the day crying.

It was only the next day, I was thinking about how I wasted almost
2 decades of my life, I learned about “sunk costs”.

Sunk costs is a term in economics that refers to the costs that
Have already been incurred and unrecoverable, like my two decades.

More importantly, economists never take sunk costs into consideration
When making a business or a financial decision.

I instantly felt better, and realized two things:

One, what you are isn't a person who has wasted X years. You are a person who has Y number of years ahead of you. What are you going to do with them?
Two, lunch and dinner is as important as breakfast. Never skip a meal, you need healthy Y years.

My updated resume will be

"It doesn't matter what I have done so far. What I am going to do in your organisation matters"

A powerful medicine for such repenting about the sunk cost is this. Barathiyaar has made this medicine.

I guess these words would help you negotiate with your self punishing thoughts @Meen .

That's hardly any age to repent. You are like a new born. got half a century more to take on the world.
Lemme tell you a little thing i know and apply. Please don't worry about the 'Hows'. Just focus on the 'Whys'
Once you pondered n concluded why, then hows would unfold on itself. Stay blessed.

You are only 28 now. Definitely could not have wasted 2 decades. What trade you specialize in so far. what was your major in post graduation. Go with the stream where your heart goes, on what you got a flair so that you wont regret like this later too. I got a crush on economics but you know i become an accountant.

There's one sita here who, being a non-accountant, demonstrate the skills of professional accountant in solving some confusing problem. and you got the idea of economics concept clean and applied. This is rare phenomenon. Anything you envisage you will be able to absorb and become. So be very careful with what you fathom. Because you will become eventually.

Nice one.. But I am bit unsure if this 'I' is really 'You'.. Age, chronology and things do not go well with each other.. Nevertheless, the moral of the story is good.. Repentance is an experience for a better future.. All the best for your Y years💐💐

Is sunc cost and write off are same? If so, then its not a phenomenon, its a product of ill planning with some exceptions.. You can never be vigilant of everything all the time, which includes our life too.. Many things happen around you and in you whether you like or not.. Unsolicited things go to dust bin.. Adha nenachu varundharadhula artham illa than😄
