Marriage has traditionally been revered as a sacred union in India, guided by religious rules and customs. Historically, it was believed that marriage was a divine wish, and couples were expected to stay together for life. However, the concept of marriage in India has evolved over the years, with a shift in focus from its sacredness to its role as a social institution, primarily for child-rearing. Let's critically examine the factors contributing to the rising number of divorce cases in India.

The relationship between extramarital affairs and divorce rates in India is complex and multifaceted. There is no single cause that can explain this trend, but there are a number of factors that seem to be contributing to both.

One factor is the changing social and cultural landscape of India. As India becomes more urbanized and Westernized, people are becoming more individualistic and less likely to stay in unhappy marriages. They are also more likely to have access to information about extramarital affairs and divorce, which can make it seem like more acceptable options.

Another factor is the increasing economic pressures on couples. The cost of living in India is rising, and couples are finding it harder to make ends meet. This can lead to stress and conflict in marriages, which can make people more vulnerable to temptation.
Finally, the rise of social media and the internet has made it easier for people to connect with others outside of their marriage. This can lead to temptation and the possibility of an extramarital affair.

It is important to note that not all extramarital affairs lead to divorce. However, extramarital affairs can damage the trust and communication in a marriage, which can make it more likely that the couple will eventually divorce.
Here are some of the specific ways in which extramarital affairs can lead to divorce:
  • Loss of trust: When one partner cheats on the other, it can shatter the trust that is essential for a healthy marriage. This can make it difficult for the couple to communicate and resolve their problems, and it can make them more likely to give up on the marriage.
  • Increased conflict: Extramarital affairs can also lead to increased conflict in a marriage. The partners may argue about the affair, or they may blame each other for the affair. This conflict can make it even more difficult for the couple to stay together.
  • Emotional distance: Extramarital affairs can also lead to emotional distance between the partners. The partner who cheated may feel guilty or ashamed, and they may withdraw from the relationship. This emotional distance can make it difficult for the couple to reconnect and rebuild their marriage.
  • Financial problems: Extramarital affairs can also lead to financial problems. The partner who cheated may spend money on the affair, or they may leave the marriage and take their financial assets with them. This can make it difficult for the other partner to support themselves and their children.
If you are considering having an extramarital affair, it is important to weigh the risks and benefits carefully. An affair can have a devastating impact on your marriage, your family, and your own happiness.
If you are already having an extramarital affair, it is important to seek help. There are many resources available to help couples who are struggling with infidelity. With the right help, you can repair your marriage or end it in a healthy way.
Here are some tips for preventing extramarital affairs and divorce:
  • Communicate openly and honestly with your partner. Talk about your needs and expectations, and be willing to listen to your partner's needs as well.
  • Spend quality time together. Make time for each other, even when you are busy. Go on dates, take walks together, or just cuddle on the couch and talk.
  • Be supportive of each other. Be there for each other during good times and bad. Be a shoulder to cry on and a source of strength.
  • Don't take each other for granted. Show your partner how much you love and appreciate them every day.
  • Seek help if you are struggling. If you are having problems in your marriage, don't be afraid to seek help from a therapist or counselor.

Other factors which contribute to divorce rates are

1️⃣Forced Marriages: Unlike the past when forced marriages were common and often endured, today's generation values individual freedom and autonomy. Consequently, forced marriages are less likely to last, as people are more inclined to prioritize their own happiness and well-being.

2️⃣
Differences in Lifestyle and Attitude:The modernization of society has brought about significant changes in how individuals perceive life and relationships. If couples have contrasting worldviews and are unwilling to compromise, it can lead to divorce, particularly in cases of mutual consent.

3️⃣
Financial Independence: With both partners typically working and financially self-sufficient, financial dependency is no longer a significant factor keeping couples together. This financial freedom allows couples to separate without being economically tied to each other.

4️⃣
Loss of Intimacy: Demands of modern life, including overworking, caring for children, and cramped living conditions, can lead to a loss of intimacy between spouses. This lack of connection can contribute to marital dissatisfaction and eventual divorce.

5️⃣
Reduced Stigma: In the past, divorce was stigmatized in Indian society. However, the new generation views divorce as a more acceptable option when a marriage isn't working. This shift in societal attitudes has led to an increase in divorce cases.

6️⃣
Fraudulent Marriages:Quick marriages facilitated by social media or matrimonial websites can lead to misinformation. Discovering deception in the marriage can be emotionally distressing, prompting couples to seek divorce.

7️⃣
Ease of Legal Process: Access to information and the simplification of divorce procedures have made it easier for couples to navigate the legal process. The removal of the cooling-off period for mutual consent divorce has expedited divorce proceedings.

8️⃣
Abuse and Cruelty: Marriages marred by physical or mental abuse have no place in a healthy society. Abuse, whether by a man or woman, is both a reason and a legal ground for divorce.

9️⃣ Impact of COVID-19: The pandemic forced couples to spend extended periods at home due to remote work, leading to challenges and increased tensions in relationships. This unexpected consequence has contributed to the rising divorce rate.

While these factors may lead individuals to consider divorce, it's essential to note that Indian law specifies specific grounds on which divorce can be filed. Grounds such as adultery, desertion, cruelty, and more are recognized by the legal system. Marriage remains a complex and deeply personal aspect of life, and each divorce case is unique.

So what according to you makes a successfull marriage.i personally believe marriage is not about chosing the right person...itz about chosing the right way of commitment and adaption.....share your insights....!!!

But what if they have no other option to vent out their emotions but has to save the family life too!?
Many women lose their passion and desires or rather put they give up after marriage just because of the social stigma women should accept whatever marital life they are getting!
An astonishing fact is that about 200 murders have been comitted last year in india just coz they had an extramarital affair! What makes women fall into these traps...even though loss of intimacy is a factor I dunt think that alone will be contributing to that!

குழந்தைகளுக்கு தெரியாமல் போகலாம். ஆனால், பெரியவர்கள் அதன் விபரீதம் அறியாமல் இருக்கிறார்கள். அவ்வளவு தான்.
